Report of the Academic Standards Committee. Committee Chair David Gray presented four proposals that were all approved by the Assembly.

(1)Change the UTA semester hour requirement for honors designation from 60 to 45 hours. This is the same requirement UNT has.  The grade

point distribution will remain the same.  This proposal will allow fewer hours be completed at UTA in order to be eligible for honors

    designation.  Proposed catalog text:

Graduation With Honors

Graduating seniors who meet the following conditions will be awarded the appropriate honors designation:

·       A student must complete at least 45 hours at U.T. Arlington.

·       The last 45 hours of resident credit will be used in the grade point average calculation (will include all hours completed in first and final semester that contain the last 45 hours).

·       A student in an approved combined bachelor’s/master’s degree program is required to count the graduate course work used for the bachelor’s degree in the grade point calculation.  (Other graduate course work will not be counted.)

·       One of the following grade point average categories for honors must be obtained:

Cum Laude:  3.50-3.69 GPA

Magna Cum Laude:  3.70-3.89 GPA

Summa Cum Laude:  3.90-4.00 GPA

(2)Eliminate the 45/75 Rule. This rule is no longer effective, as students are now advised in their departments  and must fulfill all departmental

and college requirements before being admitted to a degree program.  Proposed catalog text:

Admission to a Degree Program

Admission to the University’s degree programs is determined by application to the academic unit offering the degree.  Before being admitted to a degree program, students must fulfill all departmental and college requirements.  Degree programs may require students to complete additional courses or hours in residence prior to applying for admission to the degree program.  Until students are admitted into a degree program, students will remain on Pre-Major status.

Students in Degree Programs

Students on academic probation (see the catalog section titled Academic Probation and Dismissal) who have been accepted into a degree program are subject to all additional rules governing the definition and terms of academic probation established by the program in which they are enrolled.  The appropriate sections of this catalog and the offices of the academic deans should be consulted for specific requirements.

Students dismissed from a degree program or leaving a degree program voluntarily may transfer to another major or pre-major with the permission of the dean of the receiving college/school, or to undeclared status with the approval of the director of the University Advising Center.

Academic dismissal is reflected on the student’s permanent academic record.

(3)Create UTA Undergraduate Policy on Posthumous Degree.  This policy is similar to graduate degree policy.

A posthumous degree will be awarded if the deceased was enrolled in his or her final semester in courses that would have completed all work required for the degree and meets the minimum GPA requirements for graduation.  If an Application for Graduation is not already on file, one may  be completed by the deceased’s academic advisor or family member.  For further information, individuals may contact the Office of the Registrar or the appropriate dean’s office.

(4)Change Undergraduate Nursing Admissions to remove the Nurse Entrance Test (NET) requirement to be replaced by designated entrance exam

for School of Nursing and cumulative GPA requirements.  Proposed catalog text:

BSN Track

BSN Students desiring admission to the sequence of upper division nursing courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in

Nursing must have a:

1.               Minimum cumulative and prerequisites GPA of 2.5.

2.               Satisfactory score on the designated entrance exam on file in the School of Nursing.

As enrollment in the BSN program is limited by the available resources, the most qualified applicants will be invited to interview with nursing faculty and to submit a writing sample.  Students who have a previous baccalaureate degree, specified number of credit hours at U.T. Arlington and/or completion of required science courses at the time of evaluation will be given additional consideration.

A comprehensive exam prior to graduation may be required.

Requirements for the RN to BSN Program

Registered nurses desiring admission to this program must:

1.               Complete listed prerequisites with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

2.               Have a current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas or from a participating state of the multi-state licensure compact.

3.               Satisfactory score on the designated entrance exam on file in the School of Nursing.

Credit by RN Licensure

Transcripts of RN students are evaluated with consideration of the Coordinating Board Field of Study Curriculum guidelines.  Credit is given for all courses listed in the Field of Study Curriculum as transferable, as well as any additional course that may be applicable for transfer.

Other Business.  There was no other business.

Remarks by the Provost.  Provost Wright explained that Interim President Sorber was attending a meeting in Austin and could not be present.  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will be meeting later this week, and one item to be considered is the School of Nursing’s PhD proposal.  Administration feels confident that this proposal will be approved.

This spring, there have been 23 faculty promoted with tenure.  UTA has truly outstanding faculty, and we are proud of those that are promoted.   The post tenure review process included 59 faculty.  Academic Excellence Week brought recognition of many faculty for awards and leaves.

The status of UTA within the UT System has been in the media.  Provost Wright has attended several meetings working with city leaders and System and hopefully a final agreement will be signed this week.

Provost Wright recognized the outgoing Student Council President, Chris Featherstone, saying he has done an excellent job in his term.  In addition, Provost Wright recognized Carolyn Barros, retiring Dean of the Honors College.

Adjournment.  The meeting adjourned at 2:40 p.m.
