UT Arlington Conversations.   Laurin Porter, co-chair of the UT Arlington Conversations Team, gave an overview of the program.

This is a new initiative that we’re starting next year.  It began when the President and Provost came to me and my counterpoint on the staff, Dawn Remmers who is director of the University Advising Center and Student Success Services, and asked us if we would explore the possibility of a common reading experience for the freshmen next year.  The common reading experience, where all freshmen engage in reading and writing about the same book, is not a new idea.  Some colleges have been doing it for several decades now but it certainly has become a hot property in the last four or five years and a lot of colleges and universities across the country are engaged in it.  We went to a conference, a special workshop, and talked to people across the country to get some ideas about how to implement this program.  We came back quite excited with two decisions.  We thought we might pilot it in the smaller FIGS groups the first year but decided instead to go straight to the full freshman class.  We decided instead of just staying with the OneBook program, we would expand it and extract a significant theme from the book that we would take university wide and not just for a semester but for the full year.  We are calling that program UT Arlington Conversations and the basis of that would be the common reading program which we are calling OneBook.

Let me tell you about the common reading experience, One Book.  The book we chose this year is called The Kite Runner.  We called together a committee with faculty, staff and students represented plus all the disciplines.  We did a lot of reading and came up with this one book.  Next year we will be soliciting proposals from the faculty for both a common book and a common theme.  The idea behind the common reading experience is that it is a way for students, especially freshmen, to have an immediate identification with the university.  The book will be given to them at freshman orientation.  They will be studying it in the English composition classes, ENGL 1301, which most, if not all, of our freshmen take.  It will also be taught in the college adjustment course which we are calling Freshman Seminar.  We are hoping that other faculty might opt to add it to their syllabus, if not a required text, as an optional text because we’re hoping that the freshmen will be experiencing this in multiple venues.  The idea is that these conversations will be ongoing in the dormitory, late at night, over lunch, as well as in the classroom.  The studies have indicated that on universities where this program has been implemented, there a higher sense of identification with the university and a higher retention rate.  It helps in a variety of ways so that is one objective.

Secondly, we want to use it to teach critical thinking skills.  There will be reading and tests.  They will be discussing it in class and they will be writing on it.  As a second piece of it, we will have three writing prompts.  They can choose one of the three prompts and write an essay on the book which will be entered in a competition.  The winners will be recognized at our convocation, be given prizes and be invited to meet the author.  We hope to have the author here on the campus in the spring semester.  That will be the culmination of this program.

Finally, we want to use it to introduce freshman to the notion of universal discourse.  It’s a different level of discourse.  You’re entering a community of scholars when people are engaged in sharing ideas and debating them.  This is a part of what they are now about to experience.  For all these reasons, we’re excited about the OneBook program.

We’ve gone one step further and extracted from that book a theme.  This year it will be the theme of power.  We’re hoping that all the units of the university can tap into that theme in a variety of ways, thinking of power relations, for instance, or the power from a political point of view, local power, global power, issues of power in relation to gender or class or race. There are a variety of ways different groups can plug into it.  This is an important part of where all of you come in.  First of all, take this information back to your departments and colleges.  Explain the program and encourage your colleagues, as well as yourselves, to find ways to tap into this topic.  There are a variety ways you can do that.  All the way from having a whole unit on it to just referencing it in your class discussion and talking about it in terms of UT Arlington conversations so people will be very conscious that this is going on.

We will have a website which will be linked directly to the university homepage.  This is one way that information will be distributed but it is also a way that we can support individual events going on in your departments.  If your department has a lecture series or a guest speaker coming in, either one that is already planned or a new one, then keep this idea of power in mind and see if there’s a way to make some connection to that theme.  If so, let us know and we will put a link to that on our website.  On the website there will be a running list of all the events.  We are coordinating, promoting and encouraging as many of these events as we can.  We want to have something going on every couple of weeks, several events every month -- anything from guest speakers to panels to films related to the book .  Let me give you some examples of things already in the works.  The Library is going to have a special session on the power of the press during Banned Books Week during the last week of September.  The theatre department’s whole season has to do with issues of power so they’re going to put power in the title of their season.  The art department is going to do some type of photography exhibit.  There are all kinds of ways that we can promote these ongoing conversations.  If something is going on in your department, if you will let us know, then we will publicize that on our website as well as all the other publicity venues we are hoping to tap.

If you have any questions or ideas, please get in touch with us.  I’d be happy to come talk to your department if you like.

Other Business.  Provost Dunn encouraged everyone to stop by the University Club to see the beautiful facility.

Adjournment.  The meeting adjourned at 2:43 p.m.
